SANAA: The British cargo ship Rubymar sank in the Red Sea following being seriously damaged by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. This was confirmed by the Yemeni government. The British-registered ship was attacked by Houthis on February 18, 35 nautical miles off Yemen’s Al Mokha port in the Red Sea. After the ship carrying the flag of the Central American country of Belize was seriously damaged, the crew abandoned the ship and escaped.

The ship was carrying fertilizer and raw materials. This is the first time the ship has been sunk in an attack by the Houthis. It is estimated that the incident will create another crisis in the movement of goods in the Red Sea. The Houthis have announced that they will attack ships linked to Israel and its allies unless Israel ends its atrocities once morest Palestinians in Gaza.

There were 41,000 tons of fertilizer on board. The Yemeni government said in a statement that the sinking of the ship would cause serious environmental problems.

UK Maritime Trade Operations had earlier confirmed that the ship Rubymar, which was damaged by the missile attack, was anchored in the Red Sea and that all crew had safely exited. They requested that ships passing through the Red Sea take precautions and report suspicious situations.

The Houthi spokesman said the ship was regarding to sink and that the crew had made sure they got out safely.

Yemen’s Houthis have stepped up attacks on ships in the Red Sea in response to Israel’s inhumane attacks on Gaza. Due to this, many shipping companies had stopped their services earlier. Recently the service started once more.

The Houthis were previously quoted as saying that if the attack on Gaza is not stopped, they will target all ships bound for Israel, regardless of which country they are from. About 40 percent of the world’s commercial shipping traffic is through the Red Sea. The Suez Canal connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea is the world’s busiest shipping route. A disruption of shipping through the Red Sea would put enormous international pressure on Israel.
