The incident occurred at 08:54 local time on Saturday on a train traveling from Reading in southern England to London’s Gatwick Airport.
Train staff tried to chase the two stowaways away when the train reached Redhill, Surrey, but one refused to get off, according to the same source.
“We can confirm that the 0854 train on the Reading-Gatwick route was stopped at Redhill when a pair of squirrels boarded Gomsall without tickets in breach of rail regulations,” a GWR spokesman said.
“We attempted to remove them to Redhill but one refused to disembark and was returned to Reading to end this story,” he added.
While pets such as dogs are often boarded on British trains, rodents are not.
There are an estimated 2.7 million gray squirrels in the UK and their population continues to rise, according to the Woodland Trust, an anti-danger charity.
