The frontrunner to take over the British prime minister, Liz Terrace, pledged on Sunday that if appointed to the position, she would present a plan to deal with the rise in electricity prices within a week.
Speaking to the BBC a day before the name of the new British prime minister was announced, Foreign Secretary Liz Trace, who is expected to succeed Boris Johnson, said: “If I am elected prime minister, I will act immediately on bills and energy security.”
She did not reveal any details of the plan she was talking regarding, and only said, “I will make sure that, within a week, there will be an announcement on how we will deal with the problem.”
The Conservative Party leaders’ race lasted eight weeks with Britain facing high inflation and expected to enter a recession later in the year. British households are facing an 80% rise in electricity and gas prices, in a dramatic exacerbation of the cost of living crisis ahead of winter.
Trass, 47, topped the results of polls conducted on nearly 200,000 Conservative Party members, ahead of her rival, former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak (42 years).
After the Terrace adhered to a vague position regarding its intentions during the election campaign, last week it promised to provide “immediate support” to families facing difficult situations, without announcing concrete measures.
On Friday, it affirmed that it has a “bold program” to support “the growth of the economy,” reiterating its promise to cut taxes and reduce bureaucracy. However, analysts believe that this will never benefit the neediest.
On Sunday, she stressed that she believes that tax cuts that benefit the wealthy are fair and boost growth.
