Britain expels migrants to Rwanda 2024-04-25 21:22:44

The five dead were aboard a small boat carrying 110 migrants that capsized off the French coast in Vimereux, Calais, but the tragedy did not deter Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

“The tragic event confirms the correctness of our agreement with Rwanda (which fell on the table during Prime Minister Boris Johnson). We want to prevent people from this dangerous sea route,” the British Prime Minister stressed. Tens of thousands of migrants and refugees from Africa, the Middle East and Asia have tried in recent years with the help of smugglers to reach Britain across the Channel to escape poverty and war, with many losing their lives.

Sunak revealed that the first flights to Kigali of illegal entrants to Britain will start in 10-12 weeks. According to the “Guardian” the first deportations of 300 people will take place in July, with Rwanda receiving 1.8 million pounds for each “head”.

The last hurdles to implementing the law fell when the House of Lords withdrew its amendments late on Monday night. But the British-Rwanda agreement has caused an international outcry and is expected to receive heaps of legal appeals at home, which the Sunak government says it is ready to face.
