Britain and France criticized North Korea’s recent ballistic missile launch as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. We urged North Korea to refrain from further provocations and return to dialogue. Reporter Cho Sang-jin reports.
The United Kingdom, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, expressed strong concern over North Korea’s recent launch of a reconnaissance satellite followed by a ballistic missile launch.
[영국 외무부 대변인] “North Korea’s ballistic missile launch on 22 November is, once more, a breach of multiple UN Security Council resolutions (UNSCRs). Unlawful ballistic missile launches continue to destabilise the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula. The UK strongly urges North Korea to refrain from further provocations, return to dialogue and take credible steps towards denuclearisation.”
A British Foreign Office spokesperson said in a statement released on the 24th, “North Korea’s ballistic missile launch on the 22nd once once more violates a number of UN Security Council resolutions,” and “Illegal ballistic missile launches continue to destabilize peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.” “We are making it,” he pointed out.
He emphasized, “The UK strongly urges North Korea to refrain from further provocations, return to dialogue, and take credible steps towards denuclearization.”
France, another permanent member of the Security Council, also said in a statement on the 23rd, “We strongly condemn North Korea’s ballistic missile launch on the 22nd, which constitutes an additional violation of UN Security Council resolutions.”
[프랑스 외무부] “France utterly condemns North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile on 22 November, which constitutes a further violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions. France assures South Korea and Japan of its full solidarity. It urges North Korea to end the current escalation, immediately end its destabilizing actions, comply with its international obligations without delay and return to the negotiating table with a view to engaging in a process of completely, verifiably and irreversibly giving up its nuclear and ballistic programmes. France is fully mobilized with its partners with the aim of ensuring the implementation of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and it calls on North Korea to accept the repeated offers of dialogue made to it.”

Previously, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff stated, “North Korea launched an unknown ballistic missile from the area of Sunan, South Pyongan Province to the East Sea at approximately 11:05 p.m. on the 22nd,” and “it is presumed to have failed.”
It has been two months since North Korea launched a ballistic missile on September 13th. In addition, it was carried out one day following the launch of the third military reconnaissance satellite, and immediately following the South Korean government suspended some of the effects of the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement.
Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, who is visiting China for two days starting on the 23rd, mentioned the threat posed by North Korea in the region through a joint press conference following a meeting with Chinese Central Political Bureau member and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the 24th.
[녹취: 콜로나 외무장관] “What is happening is a direct threat to our security interests, both European and national, and that we fear in particular that Russian counterparts for the benefit of the North Korean regime risk serving these destabilizing activities in the region, in defiance of (UN) Security Council resolutions, in defiance of the balance that we all seek to maintain in the world. It’s not in anyone’s interest.”
Minister Colonna pointed out that North Korea is contributing to Russia’s illegal war of aggression by providing weapons, and pointed out, “What is happening now is a direct threat to the security interests of both Europeans and European countries.”
In particular, he expressed concern regarding the risk of Russia ignoring UN Security Council resolutions and engaging in destabilizing activities for the benefit of the North Korean regime, clearly pointing out that this is not in anyone’s interest.
