Britain: 100 tons of humanitarian aid left Cyprus for Gaza

Britain today announced the departure of a first shipment of nearly 100 tonnes of humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip. The cargo is expected to reach the Palestinian territory by sea through the artificial port built by the US military and which will soon be put into operation.

“British aid has left Cyprus for a first delivery through the new temporary port of Gaza,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

That shipment will include “nearly 100 tons” of aid, “mainly 8,400 kits” of temporary shelters made of plastic sheeting. The aid will be distributed to the Gaza Strip “as soon as possible”, the ministry added.

On Tuesday, the Pentagon announced that the artificial port built to facilitate the delivery of aid to this enclave would be operational “within the next few days.”

“Today (Wednesday), the first British aid shipment is an important moment in increasing” the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said. “However, we know that more are needed, mainly from land,” he added, assuring that Britain “will continue its efforts to lift the blockade of more access routes.”

The imminent opening of this sea route “does not replace aid delivered by land, which remains the most effective way” to support the population of the Gaza Strip, also states London, which “continues to urge Israel to keep its commitment to allow at least 500 aid trucks into Gaza” daily.

The war in this Palestinian territory erupted after Hamas’s unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7 killed more than 1,170 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Israel’s ongoing military operations have killed at least 35,173 people, according to the health ministry of Hamas, the Islamist movement that seized power in the Gaza Strip in 2007.
