Brigitte Nielsen is aware that many people think that at 60 she is far too old to be the mother of a five-year-old daughter.
More patience, more love
“When I had a child at 55, half the world said so, including my four older sons,” admits Nielsen, who gave birth to her daughter Frida at 55. But for the 80-year-old icon it is clear that there is no such thing as being ‘too old’. “We don’t say that to men who become fathers in their 60s, 70s or even over 80s. Look at Robert De Niro: He’s 79 and has a seven-month-old baby.”
On the contrary, Nielsen is sure that it is her experience and wisdom that make her a wonderful mother. “They say that grandmas are better mothers. I now have this grandma mindset and emotions. I have more patience than before and more love to give – and I think my age is the reason for that.”
No cigarettes and no alcohol
“When I was young, I was a single mother, had to fly halfway around the world all the time, and took part in films. Now my child comes first in my life. Surprisingly, I’m also less tired than I used to be.”
Nielsen now lives in Marbella with her Italian husband Mattea Dessi (45). The actress is grateful for how her life has turned out. She no longer smokes or drinks and has the freedom to dedicate her life to her daughter.
“I was able to prepare for Frida for 13 years, all these years we tried to get pregnant through artificial insemination, but it just didn’t work. The doctors said I had to be realistic regarding my chances. When it finally worked it was incredible – but there were also fears – following all, it was a high-risk pregnancy.”
Fortunately, all worries were unfounded, Frida was born healthy and completed the family.
