In the year of her 90th birthday, Brigitte Bardot, icon of French cinema of the 50s and 60s, but who remains, according to Monica Laugier, deputy mayor in charge of culture in Villefranche-sur-Mer, “extremely modern”is honored in Villefranche sur Mer.

First exhibition outside Saint-Tropez, the deputy mayor explains to France 3 Côte d’Azur that this year also honors another important event in BB’s career: it is the 70th anniversary of his very first film, An act of love, filmed in Villefranche precisely, the perfect place to celebrate it.

Only 20 years old, with brown hair and well before fame, BB then delivered a first cinematographic performance alongside Kirk Douglas and Dany Robin.

BB plays the role of Mimi:

This film in which she only plays a small role does not reveal her, but already shows her attachment to the south of France. It was only following her meeting with Roger Vadim, with whom she fell madly in love and who offered her the role of Juliette in And God created the womanthat Brigitte Bardot will explode internationally.

Thus, this first film constitutes the essence of the exhibition, and we find extracts of it on the walls of the chapel.

Unpublished images

In the chapel of Saint-Elme, the images, from the personal collection ofHenry-Jean Servatjournalist and friend of the actress, parade, ranging from posters of the greatest cinematic successes of her career to photos taken in more intimate moments of her life, most of which were captured by her lifelong friend Léonard de Raemy.

Unpublished images putting her back in the spotlight even though she walked away from film sets less than 50 years ago when she abruptly ended her career. BB appears at the beach, skiing, camera in hand or alongside her animals, her dogs that she cherishes so much.

Both fragile and strong, expressive or reserved, the photos reveal pieces of her personality, bits of life which constitute her elusive aura.

The exhibition retraces his journey, punctuated by successes and above all simple moments of his daily life, without artifice at first glance, but which give his timeless charm, these “situations” on which, during the creation of the exhibition, Henry- Jean Servat and Monica Laugier wanted to support.

Because beyond a star, Brigitte Bardot stands out above all for her assumed freedom and independence. Some consider her, rightly, as the “initiator”, the pioneer of a movement for the liberation of the status of women, bourgeois and very regulated, at a time when fashionable actresses such as Danielle Darrieux or Martine Carol remained confined to this right-thinking model.

Brigitte was an icon, an influencer before it existed. Even today, everyone associates it with modernity.

Monica Laugier, deputy mayor in charge of culture in Villefranche-sur-Mer.

This freedom “in the word » et « in actions »this is what pleased the deputy mayor and as she points out, few stars today would end their careers so suddenly, at the height of glory, and without ever looking back.

The rebellious character and this fierce freedom which characterize the actress who will celebrate her 90th birthday in September this year, resonate all the more today, on this International Women’s Rights Day.
