Brighton beat Manchester United 2-1 today in the second round of the Premier League in a match with many emotions and a long-awaited finish. Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro scored the goals for the Seagulls, while Amad Diallo had temporarily equalised for the Red Devils, who could have won with a goal from Alejandro Garnacho if it hadn’t been for an incredible offside by Joshua Zirkzee just when the Argentine was coming out to celebrate his goal.
Brighton took the lead after the half-hour mark thanks to a goal from Danny Welbeck, who headed in a cross from the wing into the six-yard box, and could have extended their lead at the start of the second half had it not been for a providential save from Diogo Dalot on the line and a header from Welbeck himself that hit the crossbar.
United were able to recover thanks to the emergence of Amad Diallo on the right, who got into the area and after a hook, unleashed a left-footed shot that was deflected by Jan-Paul van Hecke to end up converting the score to 1-1 15 minutes into the second half.
After the equaliser, Ten Hag sent on Garnacho, who five minutes after coming on finished off a perfect United counterattack with what would have been his first goal of the season, had it not been for a slight touch on his teammate Zirkzee, who had dived to try to connect with the cross as well, and ended up getting in the way – from being offside – of the Bichito’s shot, which was headed for the net.
With the goal from the Manchester team disallowed, the final stretch showed an open game that could have gone either way and was ultimately won by the home team, in the second play from a set piece, when Adingra sent in a cross that found the Brazilian Joao Pedro alone at the far post, who headed the final score to 2-1 and gave Brighton its second consecutive win in the Premier League.
