Well, it all began with a concert. in 1951, my mother attended a Judy Garland performance in Dublin. She was drawn to garland’s dynamic stage presence, the use of a hand-held microphone, her movement, and the captivating costume changes. From that day on, my mother resolved to perform in a similar fashion.

The majestic gowns worn by legendary Donegal singer Bridie Gallagher have found a new home, captivating audiences once again at Letterkenny’s An grianan Theater. These dazzling outfits, spanning decades from the 1950s to the 1970s, journeyed across the globe, gracing stages from the London Palladium and Royal Albert Hall to New York’s Lincoln Center and the Sydney Opera House. Now, thanks to a generous donation from Gallagher’s family, these iconic ensembles are available for rent, allowing others to experience the magic of her stage presence.

In July 1951, just months before her wedding, Bridie attended a Judy Garland concert in Dublin with her sister Sarah. At the time, a fledgling singer, Bridie had been performing semi-professionally in local venues, drawn to the sounds of Bing Crosby and Vera lynn. as Bridie watched Garland command the stage, she witnessed a groundbreaking approach: a hand-held microphone, fluid movement, and a series of captivating costume changes. “What Bridie experienced during Judy’s concert was transformative,” Jim recalls. “Judy used a hand-held microphone (not a common feature at the time) and constantly roved about the stage focusing on different parts of the audience… She made several dress changes during her performance, changing colours and styles. It was a very dynamic and colourful performance visually, and Bridie persistent there and then that’s how she would perform thereafter.”
Bridie’s love for the stage extended beyond the music. She understood the power of visual storytelling and meticulously crafted each costume for maximum impact. Her collection ranged from shorter pieces perfect for dances to elaborate gowns, shimmering under theatre spotlights, reserved for larger venues. Jim remembers his mother always prioritizing a design that facilitated quick changes, light, breathable fabrics, and a touch of sparkle. “she made sure that the design enabled a quick change, a light material that would not be too warm to wear in theatre lights, and invariably using a material that had some degree of sparkle which would look spectacular on stage under spotlights.”
From the 1950s to the 1960s, Bridie acquired her gowns from london and New york, treasures from the heart of the fashion world. As her career blossomed and audiences grew, Bridie began collaborating with local dressmaker Maria Trainor.Trainor, originally from Italy and renowned for her work on wedding gowns, shared Bridie’s passion for style and innovation. Jim recounts,” Bridie was persuaded on one occasion by Mrs Trainor that I had a good eye for color and design. So she would take me to the Spinning Mill in Belfast or Cassidy’s in Dublin to choose new materials.”
