Current F1 tire supplier Pirelli is likely to face competition as speculation is rife that Bridgestone has bid for the official FI tire supplier deal from 2025. Earlier this year, the FIA said it had launched a tender process for Formula 1’s Official Supply Contracts for 2025-2027, with a possible extension to 2028.
The deadline for applications is May 15th and the FIA is currently going through a process of evaluating proposals from interested parties to determine which bidders will be approved on June 16th. Successful candidates will move on to the next stage of the process, which includes discussions with F1’s commercial rights holders. In the previous 2020-2023 tire bidding process, Pirelli faced a challenge from South Korea’s Hankook. Pirelli was then granted a one-year extension until the end of 2024 due to delays in introducing new technical regulations due to the coronavirus pandemic. The application deadline for bids for 2024-2027 has passed, and it is understood that Pirelli is not the only company to bid for new tire contracts. The FIA has not confirmed the number of candidates or their identities, but sources say Bridgestone of Japan is bidding. Bridgestone was last involved in F1 from 1997 to 2010, and was the sole supplier from 2007 to 2010 following Michelin decided to pull out of the championship at the end of 2006. Even following exiting F1, Bridgestone remains involved in major Japanese categories and other international series. The Firestone brand is IndyCar’s sole supplier. Eiichi Suzuki, head of motorsports operations at Bridgestone’s motorsports planning and promotion department, revealed that the company is considering entering other series, including F1. “We are always thinking regarding what and how best we can offer motorsport activities in the global category, including F1,” he told Autosport. “Of course, we are also doing research on that sort of thing.” A spokesperson for Bridgestone said, “Bridgestone has more than 60 years of motorsports history and will continue to promote sustainable global motorsports activities.
