Bridgeport Elementary School is being recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2023-26 program term.
Apple Inc., a technology company known for its iPhones and computers, recognizes schools internationally for using Apple products to enhance learning.
Curriculum Director Leslie Kosanovic and Technology Director Lisa Clark made the announcement Tuesday morning during a school assembly. The school also had a sign that read “congratulations” on the front lawn that caught parents’ and students’ attention as they arrived on Tuesday morning.
“Last spring, we were notified that the Apple team recognized all of your hard work and therefore they nominated us because you have to be nominated. They nominated Bridgeport Elementary School to apply for an Apple Distinguished School recognition. This recognition is very difficult to achieve and it is worldwide,” Kosanovic said.
“It’s big. This is big. This is worldwide. Apple defines Apple Distinguished Schools as centers of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrate Apple’s vision for learning with technology, and they are recognized as some of the most innovative schools in the world,” Clark said.
Clark said that following being nominated, the school gathered a team of administrators and teachers to help with the application process. The team consists of Clark, Kosanovic, Principal Kamaron Sabinski, systems administrator Elliott Dean, kindergarten and Apple teacher Mikida Clegg, fourth grade and Apple teacher Kelli Hilt and Superintendent Brent Ripley.
“It is so rewarding to be a part of a team of administrators, teachers and students who work to leverage this technology to sustain creative and inspirational learning environments for all,” Clark and Kosanovic jointly stated. “Our classrooms are places where student voice and student choice remain at the forefront.”
Clark said the application process was demanding.
“We needed to fill out an application with all kinds of narratives, questions regarding our school, our story, and we had to develop three videos that showed our story,” she said.
The three videos are titled “Inspire,” “Imagine” and “Impact.”
“It is my privilege to be able to go into our classrooms and see the success of our teachers and students while also going into our community to share our story with various community groups,” Ripley said.
According to a news release from Bridgeport Elementary, Apple Distinguished Schools are recognized worldwide for their innovation.
“They are centers of leadership and educational excellence, with a clear vision for how technology-rich environments support learning goals. In Apple Distinguished Schools, forward-thinking leaders and their communities work to inspire, imagine, and impact teaching and learning and they have documented results of academic accomplishments,” the press release states.
Clark said that using Apple technology in the classroom increases student engagement, inspires creativity and establishes equal learning opportunities. The students regularly use iPads, Mac computers and other forms of technology in the classrooms.
