Traffic is flowing once more on a key border bridge between the city of Windsor, Canada, and Detroit, USA, following a nearly week-long blockade by truckers. “Great news: The Ambassador Bridge is open once more!” Wrote Canada’s Transport Minister Omar Alghabra on Twitter late Sunday evening (local time). Authorities began dispersing protests in the area over the weekend following an injunction from a Canadian court.
A quarter of all trade between the US and Canada crosses the bridge. According to US media reports, the bridge operator, the Detroit International Bridge Company, confirmed the reopening. Windsor Police said more than two dozen people were arrested over the weekend and a dozen vehicles impounded or towed away.
Elsewhere, however, protests once morest the Canadian government’s corona measures continued. According to officials, at least one other border crossing between Coutts in the Canadian province of Alberta and Sweet Grass in the US state of Montana remained closed early Monday morning. According to media reports, truckers in Canada’s capital Ottawa also held out despite the freezing cold.
