South Africa hosts since August 22 and until today 24, the 15th Brics summit held in Sandton, a suburb of the city of Johannesburg. President Ramaphosa invited 67 leaders from Africa to participate in the Brics-Africa and Brics Plus dialogues. The summit will be placed under the theme “The BRICS and Africa: partnership for mutually accelerated growth, sustainable development and inclusive multilateralism”. Tunisia, which is participating in the meeting of this summit, would be on the list of countries interested in joining this economic alliance founded in 2006.
The Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which are considered as emerging powers, should also discuss the expansion of the club to other countries.
Indeed, some twenty countries have already expressed their interest in joining this economic alliance, of which 13 have officially submitted applications to join the group. Among these countries, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Senegal.
The “Brics” group has an international development bank: The New Development Bank (New Development Bank Brics, NDB Brics). The creation of the NDB was proposed by the BRICS states as an alternative to the existing World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
It was inaugurated on July 15, 2014, on the occasion of the 6e “Brics” summit held in Fortaleza, Brazil. The headquarters of the NDB is located in the “Oriental Financial Center” in Shanghai, China.
A counterweight to influence western
Currently chaired by South Africa, the “club” of the “Brics” brings together 42% of the world’s population (3.2 billion people) and around 25% of the world’s GDP.
But, with 23 countries officially candidates to integrate the organization, this geopolitical space might, in the long term, constitute more than half of the world’s population.
Among them are mainly African countries, such as Ethiopia, Senegal, Algeria and Egypt, seduced by the political and economic “non-alignment” of the “Brics”. Other African states have shown interest in joining the organization, without however submitting an official application, such as Gabon, the Comoros or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Gulf oil countries, such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, or even Iran are candidates. A dozen other countries are candidates, particularly in Latin America and Asia. Through this enlargement, these countries intend act as a counterweight to Western influence and hope to be able to create a new world order that benefits them more than the current order.
This is not the first time that the Brics have considered expanding.
South Africa joined the group in 2010, a year following the first summit, in Russia. Today, interests diverge, some countries like the Brics club are in favor of other countries joining this alliance like Russia and China, while others are reluctant, India and Brazil in the occurrence.
Sustainable solutions to global challenges
The Brics 2023 Summit in South Africa will provide an important platform for member countries to discuss and collaborate on issues critical to the future of the global economy and international cooperation.
The theme of the summit reflects the BRICS’ commitment to working together to find lasting solutions to today’s global challenges.
Member countries will seek to strengthen their cooperation in various fields, such as economy, trade, innovation, science and technology.
Member countries will discuss regional and global security issues, including counter-terrorism, cyber security and geopolitical stability.
During the meetings of this summit, other issues will be examined, including the acceleration of “de-dollarization”. The “Brics” wish to reduce their dependence on the American dollar. The themes debated will testify to the importance of united action for a more responsive and fairer global economic system, making it possible to fight once morest inequalities, accelerate climate transition and strengthen opportunities to achieve the objectives of sustainable development. .
