BRICS Currency Discussion at the South Africa Summit: Key Insights from India’s Stance

New Delhi: BRICS countries move to introduce currency on the model of Euro. It is reported that there will be discussions in this regard at the BRICS summit in South Africa. A single currency for international trade is set to challenge the dollar and the euro. Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa accept the BRICS currency. But India’s position in this matter is crucial.

India’s stance on the BRICS currency was announced months ago by External Affairs Minister Mantri S. Jaishankar clarified. India is not interested in BRICS currency. India is capable of overcoming crises in the financial sector. He clarified that there is no need for a new currency for that.
The foreign minister also stated that India is focusing on strengthening the value of the national currency, the rupee. India’s GDP growth rate is high. So India can survive without BRICS currency. India has good trade and military relations with America and Europe. Therefore, he also stated that India does not want to weaken the relationship by going ahead with the BRICS currency.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister left for South Africa-Greece visit. He is coming to South Africa to attend the BRICS summit in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24. ‘BRICS Africa Outreach’ organized following the BRICS Summit. The Prime Minister will also participate in a special program called ‘BRICS Plus Dialogue’.

BRICS has been able to increase cooperation among countries in various fields. The prime minister also said that issues important to South India will be discussed at the BRICS summit this time. He added that he would like to hold bilateral meetings with leaders attending the BRICS summit.
