BREST, France (AP) — Steve Mounie came on as a substitute and scored with a late header for Brest, which climbed to the top of the French league on Saturday with a 1-0 win over struggling Lyon.
Lyon’s new coach, Fabio Grosso, failed to improve the team’s performance in his first game in charge. The seven-time national champion club remained winless and suffered its fourth defeat in six league games.
Grosso was appointed coach of Lyon as a replacement for Laurent Blanc.
Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes had to make several saves to preserve the tie, but he might do nothing to stop Mounie’s header in the 87th minute from a Kenny Lala cross.
Brest moved one point above Nice in first place in the table. It is the first time since the 2010-11 campaign that the small club from Brittany has occupied the place of honor.
Earlier on Saturday, Nantes achieved its second victory of the season, 5-3 over Lorient.
Paris Saint-Germain, the defending champion, hosts Marseille this Sunday, in the most attractive match on the menu.
