Brentford forward Ivan Toney, who was suspended for eight months for violating the rules of the sweepstakes game, repeatedly bet on the defeat of his team. This is stated in the motivational part of the decision to remove Tony, published on the website of the Football Association of England (FA).

Tony pleaded guilty at the hearing to all 232 betting violations. The allegations covered a four-year period from February 2017 to January 2021. At this time, he was a player for Newcastle and Peterborough, and also played on loan for several other clubs in the lower divisions of the championship of England.

Of these 232 violations:

– 126 bets were on matches of tournaments in which Tony’s club participated at that time;

– of those 126 bets, 29 were related to the club that Tony was playing for at the time;

– of those 29 – 16 were for his team to win in 15 different matches. Tony played in 11 of those meetings;

– Of these 29, the remaining 13 were for the defeat of his team. Tony did not play in any of these matches;

– out of 126 bets, 15 were made that Tony would score a goal. They were made at a time when it was not generally known that he would start or not in the respective matches.

The regulatory commission ruled that there was no evidence that Tony was involved in match-fixing.

It is noted that the expert psychiatrist who testified to the FA regulatory commission diagnosed Tony with a gambling addiction and concluded that he needed help. As a result, Tony’s suspension was reduced from 11 to eight months.

Toni has also been fined £50,000 and will be able to return to the pitch on 17 January 2024.

With 20 goals in 33 games, the striker is currently third in the Premier League’s top scorer list. The 27-year-old made his England debut in March.
