ALGIERS – The Algerian Maritime Transport Group (GATMA) has initiated significant reforms aimed at injecting new dynamism into this vital activity, through the revival of maritime transport, the modernization of its management method and the mobilization of all human and material resources, we learned Monday from the Ministry of Transport.
The GATMA Group, under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport, firstly created a new company (CNAN EL DJAZAIR) bringing together its two subsidiaries CNAN NORD and CNAN MED, the objective being to promote its fleet maritime and to bring together its capabilities.
The fleet consisting of 13 ships was also rehabilitated through maintenance and repair operations carried out by Algerian skills from the National Naval Repair Company (ERENAV).
Seven (7) vessels are currently in service and six (6) others undergoing maintenance and repair. These will resume service at the end of 2023 or early 2024 so that the fleet is 100% operational.
This approach is part of supporting economic operators and implementing the strategy drawn up to boost freight capacity.
It also aims to access African markets, particularly following the inauguration of commercial maritime lines to Mauritania and Senegal, while prospecting new promising markets such as the Gulf countries and East Africa.
As for the maritime transport of passengers, GATMA has drawn up a special program in anticipation of the 2024 summer season, through the renovation and rehabilitation of the ferry boats Tariq Ibn Ziyad and El Djazaïr II, which are currently at the workshop level. maintenance and repair, in addition to the boats already in service, namely the ferry boats Badji Mokhtar 3 and the Tassili 2, while planning the chartering of another boat to have a fleet of 5 boats and be able to thus cope with the significant demand that the company experiences during the summer season, particularly that of the national community abroad for optimal care, which would also make it possible to cover European destinations, namely Italy , Spain and France, knowing that the crossing program for next season will be announced during the first quarter of 2024.
As part of the sector’s policy aimed at digitizing services and bringing the administration closer to the citizen, a new platform, 100% Algerian, has been put into service for reservations and electronic payment, in order to unclog commercial agencies, and allow customers to book their trips with ease.
