For the first time in France, the breast cancer of a former nurse has been recognized as an occupational disease, a decision that might set a precedent. In this case, however, it is night work that is at issue. The 62-year-old former nurse, who worked regarding one night a week in the hospital for 28 years, has successfully demonstrated that over the years it has been able to disrupt her biological clock and affect her immune defences. In his file, other probable risk factors are also noted, such as ionizing radiation and chemicals to sterilize equipment.
In France as in Quebec, the government draws up lists of occupational diseases. If the disease is on the list, the procedures are much simpler, but if it is not, the burden of proof falls on the shoulders of the workers.
This generates a lot of time, money, analyzes and expert opinions.
This big fight led by French unions might nevertheless make it easier for others, including nursing colleagues, as the burglar journalist Hélène Mercier explains.
Each week, Hélène Mercier, the burglar journalist, presents us with an interesting initiative adopted elsewhere in the world, wondering if it can be imported into Montreal. Do you have a suggestion for him? Write to us: [email protected].
