Breakthrough in the Madeleine McCann case? New arrangements

Sex offender Christian Brueckner, who is serving a seven-year sentence for raping a pensioner, allegedly confessed in prison to kidnapping a child in Portugal. This is what his former cellmate testified during the ongoing trial. Christian Brueckner is the main suspect in the tragic disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The kidnapping that shocked the world

Madeleine McCann was just three years old when she disappeared without a trace while on a family holiday in Pria Da Luz on May 3, 2007. Her parents went out to dinner at a nearby restaurant with three other couples and returned to their hotel room to find their daughter’s bed empty. Since then, they have been campaigning to find their child. The girl would be 20 years old now.

German-born Brueckner has never been officially charged in the case and denies any involvement in one of the most high-profile kidnappings in recent decades. He is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for the rape of a pensioner, which occurred in Portugal in 2005. In 2022, the investigator dealing with the girl’s case said that they were “sure that Christian Brueckner is the murderer of Madeleine McCann.” However, there is no evidence to prove his guilt.

Brueckner is accused of a number of sexual crimes that he committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017, unrelated to the Madeleine case.

On Wednesday, Brueckner’s former cellmate, Laurentiu Codin, told the court that the man had confessed to kidnapping the child in Portugal.

“He told me that he kidnapped in Portugal. He was in a region where there are hotels and rich people live. He said there was an open window somewhere, he told me that,” he testified.

“He was looking for money. He said he didn’t find any money, but he found the baby and took him. He said two hours later there were police and dogs everywhere, so he walked away, away from the area. I’m just telling you what he told me. He told me that there was a person with him with whom he had a quarrel, allegedly it was his woman,” he told the court.

“He said he took the child to Portugal in his car, and while the police and dogs were at home, he drove away and was gone. He asked me if the child’s DNA could be taken from the bones underground,” added Brueckner’s fellow prisoner.
