Arl8b : this is the small name of a protein currently at the forefront of the medical scene. The reason ? A team of researchers from the Max Delbrück Center (Germany) has just identified it as a potential marker in the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease! Annett Böddrich is the main author of the article published this July 20 in Genome Medicine.

“We can show that affected patients have significantly more Arl8b in their cerebrospinal fluid than healthy controls”, she explains. The disease is characterized by two types of lesions: the abnormal formation of plaques by amyloid beta peptides toxic to brain cells, and the modification of the tau protein, essential to the structure of neurons.

According to the Pasteur Institute, nearly 900,000 French people are affected by this form of dementia. The first marks are generally present years before the first symptoms, hence the importance of early diagnosis. The study, carried out on a small number of patients, is still very recent, moderate the researchers, but bears a lot of hope.
