De Sutter will draw the new list. Dieter Verscheure comes second and mentions other members of the N-VA, such as municipal councilor Katelijn Moerman, who want to join Nieuw Horebeke. However, it is not a cartel between the Greens and the N-VA, says Ms. De Sutter, who speaks of an “open list” which also welcomes independent candidates. “We are looking for people with new ideas. They must not be linked to party politics, but recognize themselves in our program.”

In the last elections, in 2018, Groen received more than 20% of the votes in Horebeke, which has around 2,000 inhabitants. The N-VA also achieved a similar score and today the two parties each hold two seats in the municipal council out of a total of 11. Volksbelangen has an absolute majority and has continuously delivered the mayor since 1964.
First with the victory of Jozef Browaeys in 1965, during the last elections, his daughter Cynthia Browaeys took over. Jozef Browaeys became one of the longest-serving mayors in Belgium, with nine consecutive mandates. In the last elections, only Groen and the N-VA ran and formed a cartel with the CD&V.
