Breaking Taboos: A Comprehensive Guide to Education in Relational, Emotional, and Sexual Life in Brussels Schools

This director of a Brussels primary school in the free network, who wished to remain anonymous, is concerned in the foreground by the debates which animate parents about the place of Education in relational, emotional and sexual life in the classes. In his words, the subject is particularly sensitive and has earned him heated discussions with families. In an attempt to reassure the fiercest opponents of EVRAS, the school has decided to set up an “EVRAS committee” intended to involve parents. “In the school’s parents’ association, there is an EVRAS committee which includes parents, teachers, members of the organizing authority and the nurse in charge of giving the activities. We hope to reassure parents in this way” , she explains.

In 37 years of career, the director has often faced the reluctance of some of the parents. “Since I’ve been here, the school has always given an animation on puberty to all sixth graders and there are parents who have always had a hard time with this idea and who continue to oppose it openly. They believe that it is not up to family planning to give these animations and more generally, do not want us to discuss a series of subjects with their children, “she continues. The subject that currently arouses the most fear is that of transidentity. “A nurse had the misfortune, during an animation, to separate the students into two groups by asking the ‘children who feel like girls’ to stand on one side of the class and ‘those who feel like boys’ from the Other. For some parents, we had opened Pandora’s box,” she testifies.

These remarks did not make the director flinch, who says she regrets the erroneous information circulating on social networks about education in relational, emotional and sexual life. “Parents think that they aim to encourage their children to come out as transgender. This is completely false, informing is not encouraging. Parents believe that it is their role to talk about these subjects with their children, but very often , when they tell us that, they never talk about it as a family. In our school, we have students of all faiths and backgrounds. Some are informed at home, from other countries. It is important to to be able to provide uniform information to all.”
