The FIFA President is enthusiastic regarding this Women’s World Cup, and the way the whole world has seen it, with two billion viewers.
It was a tournament that broke new ground: the first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in Oceania, the quality of the organizers, and a television audience record here in the country. We asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the competition’s legacy.

I am extremely happy, extremely proud, replies Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA. This FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 has quite simply been the biggest, best FIFA Women’s World Cup ever. Great atmosphere: full stadiums, in the streets, everywhere. Cheerful, happy people. Australia and New Zealand have been truly fantastic hosts. 2 billion viewers, in the stadiums 2 million spectators. Many, many records have been broken. Surprises, results that we might not expect. Eight newcomers, a new world champion. I mean, what more might you want?
Sam Ashoo, euronews:
“In the future, what do you see as the legacy of this competition?”
Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA:
“Well, I think this FIFA Women’s World Cup has really had an impact, transforming society, in Australia and New Zealand. That’s what everyone here talks to me regarding. Even around the world , people now see women’s football in a completely different way because for many it was maybe the first time they watched a game and they see that in fact it is a great sport, great athletes, great technical skills, great tactical skills, great emotions, great passion. Same as the men. And with an extremely happy vibe. So I think everyone now looks at women’s football in a completely different way. And that’s exactly what we wanted to achieve. And from there, we take it to the next level.”
Sam Ashoo, euronews:
“And will that level, given the record numbers we’ve seen so far in this competition, be able to get as many viewership as the men’s world cups ?”
Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA:
“Well, I think the future definitely belongs to women’s football. And it’s not just regarding PR, it’s not just something we say. It’s really facts and figures that show it. And, you know, half of the world’s population are women. So obviously it’s going to grow, it’s going to thrive. And, you know, there’s already not a lot of male competition that can compete with this FIFA Women’s World Cup So from there I think the way is open for it to become as big as the Men’s World Cup.”
The venue for the next World Cup has yet to be decided, but whoever hosts it, 2027 is expected to be even bigger than what we’ve seen here in Australia and New Zealand.
