TSG Hoffenheim managed a real transfer coup!

As the Sinsheimer announced on Monday, they secured the services of the Hungarian national player and central defender Attila Szalai from Fenerbahce Istanbul.

The Magyar, who trained partly at Rapid Vienna in his youth, comes to Hoffenheim for a whopping EUR 12 million and is thus on a par with the transfers of Munas Dabbur and Diadie Samassekou, who were once active at FC Red Bull Salzburg. Initially, a much higher sum was assumed, 15 million euros were in the room.

Due to a solidarity contribution, around 2.5 percent of the transfer fee also goes to Hütteldorf, which is why the Green-Whites are happy about the successful transfer. But also in Hoffenheim they are very impressed by Hungary’s 35-time international.

Szalai the right type of player for Hoffenheim

“Attila is a type of player who combines unconditional toughness in tackles, tremendous header power and an unbelievable mentality,” said TSG Managing Director Alexander Rosen in a broadcast about his new protégé.

Szalai himself is looking forward to the coming challenge and the German Bundesliga adventure: “I had several options for my sporting future, but I made a conscious decision to join TSG Hoffenheim. I really wanted to play in the Bundesliga and I’m convinced that it’s the right step for me.”

Szalai was under contract in the Rapid youth team from 2012 to 2017 before the Hungarian went to Fenerbahce Istanbul via detours.

In his two-and-a-half years, the 25-year-old made 117 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing four assists. Now he is continuing his career at TSG.
