(CNN)– The US Embassy in Moscow said on Friday that it was “shocked” by reports of a “terrorist attack” in Concert hall in the city of Crocus, Moscow region.
The embassy added, in a statement via Telegram: “We express our sincere condolences to the Russian people for the loss of life and injuries as a result of the terrorist attack.”
He continued: “As events continue to develop, we strongly encourage American citizens in Moscow to avoid the area, follow the instructions of local security authorities, and monitor local media for updates.”
It is noteworthy that Russian President Vladimir Putin described the warnings issued by the US Embassy earlier this week regarding possible terrorist attacks in Moscow as “provocative.”
In a speech on Tuesday, Putin told the FSB: “All these actions resemble outright blackmail and the intention to intimidate and destabilize our society. You are well aware of them, so I will not go into details at this stage.”
The US embassy said on March 7 that Americans should “avoid large gatherings for the next 48 hours and that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow.”
On Friday evening, a concert hall in the city of Crocus, located on the outskirts of the Russian capital, became the scene of an armed attack that killed at least 40 people and injured 100 others, according to Russian official media.
