UPDATE 10:32 a.m. | The scene is now secure. A press conference is planned a little later

A major police operation is currently taking place regarding a shooter who occurred near Perry High School in Iowa. A spokesperson for the Perry Police Department confirmed there was an episode of gun violence at the facility.

Around 10:30 a.m., CNN reported that the scene was secure. NBC News quoted a spokesperson for MercyOne Hospital as confirming that victims were heading their way, without confirming the number of patients expected.

The police were called to the scene around 7:40 a.m. and classes were canceled. The evacuation was completed around 8:25 a.m. Officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were also dispatched to the scene.

According to local channel KCCI, parents reported that students were refused entry when they arrived at school. A mother told the same source that she was trying to locate her boy and that her daughter was escorted from the scene around 7:45 a.m.

NBC News affiliate WHO reports that several police and even military vehicles were parked in front of the school building.

An ambulance was also seen.

Perry is a town of regarding 8,000 located nearly 40 miles northwest of the capital Des Moines.

The school district has approximately 1,800 students total. It’s the first day back to class to start the second term.
