Montreal Canadiens hockey fans will be able to reconnect with their favorites starting Monday with the official launch of activities for the next season.
From 8 a.m., you can follow the team’s traditional golf tournament on our airwaves with numerous interviews with players and team management. Expectations for the next season will be discussed as well as a look back at the last summer period.
No one expected a busy summer in Montreal, but there were still some personnel movements. Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes started off with some big moves during the draft period.
As he did last year with Kirby Dach, the general manager took advantage of the draft week to acquire a promising forward who is slow to develop. Hughes got Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a first-round pick, a second-round pick and Gianni Fairbrother.
He then took advantage of the draft to select Austrian defender David Reinbacher with the fifth pick of the draft. The rest of the auction was marked by the selection of three goalkeepers, including Jacob Fowler, as well as Florian Xhekaj, brother of defender Arber.
Silent on the free agent market on July 1, Hughes nevertheless took advantage of the day to make room on the Canadiens’ blue line by trading 33-year-old guard Joel Edmundson to the Washington Capitals, in exchange for a pick 3rd round pick and a 7th round pick in 2024.
Hughes returned to action in August when he was involved as the third destination in the Karlsson trade. This transaction allowed Hughes to trade Mike Hoffman to the Sharks and get his hands on Nathan Légaré, Casey DeSmith, a second round pick… and Jeff Petry!
Petry only spent a few days in Montreal, before being sent to the Detroit Red Wings for Gustav Lindstrom and a 4th round pick in 2025.
