Alonso is under contract through the end of 2024, and the Mets are “open” to dealing with players who will be free agents following next season. However, general manager Billy Eppler stressed Sunday that those players will come at a high price.
“The bar is high,” Eppler said, “but we are willing under certain circumstances to take (owner Steve Cohen’s) investment and repurpose it to serve the greater objective, which is to build a championship-focused team.”
However, MLB Network correspondent Jon Heyman was emphatic regarding Alonso’s status with the Mets, reporting Tuesday that the club has “zero intention” to trade him.
Separately, Heyman said Monday there’s “a lot of action” surrounding outfielder Tommy Pham, adding Tuesday that the Mets are “getting a lot of offers” for reliever Brooks Raley.
Pham will be a free agent following this season, while Raley will be under contractual control of the team until the end of 2024. His deal includes a club option valued at $6.5 million for 2025, with compensation of $1.25 million in the event of not be exercised
