Thrissur ∙ The food safety department caught and destroyed 1570 kg of worm-eaten fish brought to Shalimar Express from Balasore in Odisha following hours of arguments. The food safety team and the police stood guard outside the platform of the Thrissur railway station following the railway authorities refused to release the foul-smelling fish for inspection.

Although the officers were blindfolded, half of the fish boxes were smuggled out through a different route, but the police, who were aware of the information, chased them, caught them, brought them back and handed them over to the Food Safety Department. A team of officials who broke open the fish boxes in front of the station found worm-eaten fish. Ammonium was detected in the test using the Quick Kit.

18 thermocol boxes were unloaded on the first platform of Thrissur station from the Shalimar Express which arrived around 4 pm on Friday. 12 boxes of salted dried fish. 6 boxes of frozen raw fish. An average of 80 kg of fish per box.

The fish came in the name of 4 traders in Sakthan Market. Passengers informed the Food Safety Department following the smell spread. The RPF stopped the food safety team that reached the platform for inspection. The food safety department of the railways was instructed to check and return. However, the inspection team will return only following the food safety department of the railways arrives. The dispute continued till 11.30. Still, when no decision was reached, they stood guard outside the station.

A group of people came yesterday morning at 8 o’clock and took the fish boxes outside the station through another door, loaded them into autos and took them to the market. The police came following the information and brought the autos back to the station yard. When the boxes were opened under the leadership of food safety officers, worms were found. Most of the boxes are fishes like Aoli, Neimeen and Manthal. Samples were taken from these and sent to Kakkanad lab and the rest were destroyed. Only 3 boxes of dried fish have been kept intact. These will be released to the owners only if the test results show that no chemicals have been added.
