A major fire broke out on Monday in a building located on the Grand-Place in Nivelles, city authorities announced. The municipal emergency plan was triggered around 12:30 p.m.
Emergency services are on site, a security perimeter has been set up and the residents concerned have been redirected to a safe place.
The situation is managed from the crisis center by the Municipal Coordination Committee led by Mayor Pierre Huart.

The police in the Nivelles-Genappe area ask the population to avoid the city center and to obey the orders of the police deployed on the ground.
Students and teachers at the school located near the burning building were asked to stay indoors.
Residents of the Saint-Jacques district, rue de Saintes and the surrounding area of the Grand-place are also invited to stay at home with their doors and windows closed.

TEC bus lines have been diverted from the city center.
Security measures will remain in effect throughout the followingnoon and a series of roads in the city center will remain closed to traffic.
