(CNN) – The US House of Representatives voted, on Tuesday, to remove Republican Kevin McCarthy from his position as Speaker of the House, in a historic precedent.
The vote was approved by a majority of representatives, with the result being 216 votes to 210, and 8 Republicans voted to dismiss McCarthy.
On Monday, Republican Representative Matt Gaetz submitted a memorandum calling for the dismissal of Kevin McCarthy, in a “rare” step. Gaetz took that step in response to the House of Representatives’ approval, on Saturday, of the bill that would spare the government from shutting down, despite the opposition of some Republican representatives to some. Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, a top McCarthy ally, was appointed interim speaker of the council.
