The Ukrainian and Russian occupation authorities list six dead on Thursday, June 8, following thea destruction of the Kakhovka dam. An area of more than 600 km2 was flooded in southern Ukraine, according to the governor of the Kherson region. The flooded areas are on the right bank of the Dnipro river controlled by the Ukrainians as on the left bank occupied by the Russians. Follow our live.
Zelensky goes to Kherson. “Our task is to protect lives and help people as much as possible. Thank you rescuers and volunteers!”, greeted the Ukrainian president in a message published on social networks. Volodymr Zelensky also promised “compensation” pour “affected residents”.
Evacuations continue. Buses and trains take turns to move the affected populations. According to Ukrainian emergency services, 1,995 people were evacuated, including 103 children. Many others fled on their own. On the Russian side, 4,500 people “have already been evacuated”according to the occupation authorities on Thursday.
