After nine years at the helm of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele has been suspended from his post and arrested by the Nigerian security services. The Department of State Security confirmed on Saturday followingnoon that he was being retained by its services.

Video posted on social media shows Godwin Emefiele boarding a private jet, watched by men in suits, handcuffs in hand.

The government statement released overnight Friday said the CBN governor was suspended from his post following an ongoing investigation. Godwin Emefiele may have been extremely criticized, but this suspension raises legal questions.

The Labor Party accuses the new head of state of waging a personal ‘vendetta’ once morest Godwin Emefiele – accused of disrupting the election campaign by replacing all of Nigeria’s banknotes, ostensibly to fight vote buying.
