A US State Department spokesperson confirmed, on Tuesday, that an accident occurred, Tuesday, in Anambra State, Nigeria, according to Al-Hurra correspondent.

The spokesman said that personnel from the US mission in Nigeria are working with the Nigerian security services to investigate the incident.

And the White House announced, on Tuesday, that an American convoy was attacked in Nigeria, but that no American citizen was injured in the incident.

During a press conference at the White House, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated that although there were no injuries or deaths of Americans, injuries were reported in the incident, and it is possible that there were deaths.

“What I can tell you is that no American citizen was hurt,” Kirby said. “But we know regarding some of the casualties, maybe even some of the dead, but I don’t want to get too ahead of our current situation,” he added.

Kirby said the White House and relevant authorities are investigating the incident to gather more information and determine the full extent of the losses.

For its part, CNN reported, on Tuesday, that the attack on the American convoy resulted in the death of four people: two employees of the US Consulate and two police officers, according to what the network quoted from the local police and US officials.

According to “CNN”, the attack took place in the southeastern state of Anambra, and the local police command told the network that the attackers “killed two policemen and two US consulate employees and set their bodies and cars on fire.”

Nigerian Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ikinga Tuchukwu, said that when the attackers saw the security forces, they “ran away with two police officers and the driver of the second vehicle in the convoy.” “There was no American citizen in the convoy,” he added.

Police said the joint security forces “have embarked on a rescue operation in the area”.
