“Breaking Boundaries: Same-Sex Figure Skating Duo Proposes Revolutionary Program Segments”

Recently, the entire figure skating community was discussing news from Canada, where it was proposed to introduce separate segments of the program with the participation of two same-sex skaters. At the end of April, two top-level figure skaters decided to convince the ISU to accept these changes. They did not write a letter, did not contact directly, but decided to show how it might look.

As a result, we saw several pieces of dance Gabriela Papadakis and Madison Hubbell. They initially announced it, but no one knew exactly what would happen in the end. So, the dancers themselves set up a program for themselves, including the obligatory elements there: twizzles, rotations, tracks and even support.

As an experiment, it looks very worthy and interesting. Gabriela and Madison are renowned athletes with the best skating in their field. This is not a small-town case, regarding which they learn quite by accident. This is a very loud statement from the real representatives of figure skating.

The program turned out to be beautiful – the skaters performed the required elements, choreographed and looked very interesting. Several times they trained complex support in the boat, came up with a spin so that both were comfortable.

Perhaps for some this will seem unusual, because we know only one version of pair skating – between a man and a woman. The easiest way (used by most) to talk regarding the love between partners in the program. This is clear to any spectator – here a man and a woman ride, they are in love, they have some kind of story. Most likely, this is what causes rejection in the audience. Supports, touches, glances – in our head it’s all regarding love.

Same-sex duos can break that stereotype. Each program from such skaters can tell a new story. A striking example is Maya and Alex Shibutani. Brother and sister, under the guidance of Maria Zueva, never put on programs regarding love – they were cheerful and lyrical, but always regarding some other feeling.

Aesthetically, the dance looks very beautiful. First of all, thanks to the skills of both skaters. They rolled up very quickly, showing a first-class level of glide and synchronism. The girls have been friends for a long time, so it was easy for them to come to an agreement. They made up a real competitive dance, which can already be shown at competitions.

This was the emphasis – the skaters want to prove that there are no limits in figure skating. Our sport is quite conservative, any experiments are initially perceived with hostility, and only then, following a long time, do they become the norm. Papadakis and Hubbell decided to be the first to show how an as yet unaccepted innovation might work.

Women’s pair skating looks beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and pleasant. So far, the internal framework prevents us from seeing all the charm of this phenomenon. It is difficult to predict how the ISU will respond to such a powerful statement. Even if it does not work, we have the opportunity to look at this experiment and wait for new ones.
