Chronic disease characterized by excess glucose (sucre) in the blooddiabetes affected nearly 4 million French in 2019.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common, with 92 % cases.
It is characterized by the decreased sensitivity of cells to insulin, pancreatic hormone whose role is to facilitate the penetration of glucose into cells. This has the effect of generate increased demand into insulin causing the cells of the pancreas to produce more until they are exhausted.
Type 2 diabetes usually appears following age 40 and can be misunderstood for years.
Generally, type 2 diabetes occurs when the patient has genetic predispositions.
External factors can be taken into account in triggering type 2 diabetes such as our way of life : tobacco, diet or sedentary lifestyle.
Mealtime is important to avoid the risk of type 2 diabetes
Glucose and lipid homeostasis are regulated by our circadian rhythm (biological rhythm), itself influenced by our feed.
Researchers from ISGlobal (Spain) and Inserm (France) recently published a study in the International Journal of Epidemiologya on the the importance of breakfast time. This would be associated with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
So 103,312 people were included in the study for the team to examine the incidence of type 2 diabetes among them.
The latter completed online food diaries in which they indicated what they ate and drank over a 24-hour period for three non-consecutive days. Meal times were also mentioned.
During a median follow-up of 7.3 years, 963 new cases of type 2 diabetes were noted.
Participants taking their first meal following 9am had a higher incidence type 2 diabetes, knowing that the time of the meal taken before had no impact. “Biologically, it makes sense, because we know that the fact of skipping breakfast affects glucose control and lipids, as well as insulin levels,” said Anna Palomar-Cros, first author of the study and researcher at ISGlobal.
Dinner time is also very important since the study showed that a dinner following 10 p.m. may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. “Our results suggest that a first meal before 8 a.m. and a last meal before 7 p.m. can help reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes,” said Manolis Kogevinas, researcher at ISGlobal and co-author of the study.
