The employee at a branch in Bitonto, near the southern Italian port city of Bari, has now been fired, according to a judicial investigation reported by the daily newspaper “Domani” in its Thursday edition.

The people to whose bank accounts the employee had secured access included various politicians, entrepreneurs, athletes and military personnel. The accounts of Meloni’s ex-partner Andrea Gianbruno and Senate President Ignazio La Russa were also snooped by the bank employee. In total, he was accused of over 7,000 illegal accesses to the accounts.

Noticed frequent account queries

The investigation is being carried out by the public prosecutor’s office in the city of Bari. It was brought in by the manager of the bank branch where the employee worked after internal checks revealed the employee’s frequent account inquiries. This was determined by the bank’s cyber control system.

The topic of IT system security is currently causing debate in Italy. Last week, police arrested a 24-year-old Italian who is suspected of hacking the Justice Ministry in Rome. The suspected hacker is said to have repeatedly penetrated the Justice Department’s computer system and had the ability to block it, police said. It was said that the suspected hacker, an IT employee, also managed to obtain investigation files that are subject to judicial secrecy.
