BRASILIA.- The main national security adviser to the Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the head of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI) Gonçalves Dias, I quit on Wednesday and his decision was already accepted by the president.
The departure of Dias, the first cabinet member of Lula’s third term to fallis known following CNN Brazil published images of the general circulating through the Planalto Palace during the attacks on January 8.
Although the general’s presence was known in the place following the invasion, the images of “GDias” -as he is known- walking aimlessly through the third floor of the Planalto they began to be used by the opposition as a sign that the government had somehow facilitated the entry of the invaders.
In the Planalto Palace they have no doubt that the retired general did not support or facilitate the invasion in any way. A friend of Lula for more than 20 years, “GDias” was head of presidential security during the two previous terms of the leader.
“What got complicated is that he did not disclose the scope of the GSI action on January 8”said a government palace source.
In addition, the images disclosed by CNN, and which would be in the case being handled by the Supreme Court, they would not have been delivered in their entirety to the Presidency of the Republic.
The presence of Dias in the Planalto was already known. The general arrived shortly following the invasion and stayed until Lula’s arrival on the night of January 8., when all the coup plotters had already been expelled and arrested. The opposition now claims that Dias seems “very calm” walking through the third floor while the invaders were still in place.
Dias’s position in the images would not be one of the reasons for his departure. A source told Archyde.com that the general – who managed to get the invaders out of the door of the presidential room and close the bulletproof glass windows – did what he might, alone.
The question now is who will Lula put in the place of “GDias” in the GSI, a strategic position. The reserve general accepted the post precisely because the president did not have anyone he trusted among the high-ranking military to take over in January, according to the same palace source. Ricardo Nigri, executive secretary, will occupy the position on an interim basis.
