Brazil’s Heartfelt Victory: A Football Odyssey

A fortunate first-half goal from Rodrygo enabled a still-lacking Brazil to clear its horizons in World Cup qualifying after beating Ecuador 1-0 at home.

The Canarinha, forced to get the three points at home after three consecutive defeats in the qualifiers (something unprecedented), got the result they needed, but left doubts and were booed by their fans.

The victory allowed Brazil to rise to fourth place with 10 points, still far from the 18 points of leader Argentina, while Ecuador, with 8 points, fell to sixth place, the last one with guaranteed qualification for the World Cup, and lost the unbeaten streak it had maintained in its last five matches.

Neither the ball control for most of the time, nor the offensive power of Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo, the Real Madrid attacking duo, nor the debut of the 17-year-old jewel Estevao, cleared the doubts of a team that continues to suffer without Neymar, still injured.

Brazil struggled in the first half to overcome an Ecuador that entrenched itself in its area and defended with five players in a row at the back.

Brazil opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Lucas Paquetá found Rodrygo unmarked outside the area and the Madrid forward fired a right-footed shot that deflected off an opponent and ended up beating goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez.

The goal gave more freedom to the Brazilians, who had some other opportunities, mainly with Luiz Henrique, but without generating much danger.

In an attempt to react, Argentine Sebastián Beccacece, who made his debut as Ecuador’s coach, reinforced his attack for the second half with the entry of Kendry Páez and Carlos Gruezo.

In the final minutes, Brazil preferred to manage its victory and ended up defending itself and was dismissed with some boos from the stands.

In the next qualifying round, Brazil will visit Paraguay; and Ecuador will host Peru.

COLOMBIA MAINTAINED its unbeaten record and consolidated its third place by drawing 1-1 in its visit to Peru, in the last match of the seventh round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Colombian Liverpool striker Luis Díaz equalised in the 81st minute, heading in a corner kick taken by James Rodríguez.

James came on as a substitute in the second half in place of Luis Sinisterra.

Shortly before, at 67′, the locals surprised Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. Peruvian midfielder Alexander Callens entered the rival area and scored the first goal with a header after receiving a pass from Sergio Peña.

Díaz frequently arrived at the opponent’s half during the first half, as did Sinisterra, but neither were able to score.

On the other side, the Italian-Peruvian Gianluca Lapadula scored at 24′, but the Uruguayan referee Esteban Ostojich disallowed it for marking an offside position.

Peru remains at the bottom of the table with only three points after seven games played, five points away from the play-offs.

For the next match, to be played on Tuesday, Peru will visit Ecuador, while Colombia will host Argentina, in a re-edition of the final of the last Copa América.— EFE and AP
