Today’s story involving the Apple Watch it happened close to us, much more than the others we are used to reporting. Thanks to Apple Watch, our reader’s grandmother Diego Fioravanti discovered early heart problems that might eventually result in a fatality.
The most curious thing regarding all this is that the 82-year-old lady is not even the owner of the Apple Watch that helped save her life — it belongs to Diego — but she made a point of periodically borrowing the watch to do the electrocardiogram and measure the heart rate. oxygen level in your blood. In the first few months, the device did not show any problems with her heart.
However, last August, she and Diego were surprised to see the watch detect atrial fibrillation – which is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia. As he thought it was a false positive, he tested the Apple Watch on other people and got a normal result, but whenever he tested it once more on his grandmother, the watch showed the problem once more.
After a visit to the cardiologist, they confirmed cardiac arrhythmia, but the worst was yet to come. Days following the consultation, Diego’s grandmother began to feel short of breath and a strong tiredness that only increased every day. When the shortness of breath seemed to reach its limit, the Apple Watch detected that her blood oxygen level was at 86% – which sent them rushing to the hospital.
There, it was detected that she had had a lung stroke as a result of cardiac arrhythmia – which ended up lowering the level of oxygen in the blood. She was hospitalized for a few days and, fortunately, is now fully recovered.
Diego is obviously grateful to be able to tell this story with a happy ending, thanks to Apple’s smart watch:
If it weren’t for the Apple Watch, we wouldn’t have discovered the arrhythmia in time and we wouldn’t have discovered that the saturation was low. Today, following the treatment, the ECG results are back to normal.
This might be just another story of how the Apple device proved to be useful in monitoring the health of users, but it has a more special flavor to know that the watch has also helped to save the lives of Brazilians, among the many cases of others countries we usually follow!
