Brazilian TV legend Silvio Santos dies at 93

The media mogul owned SBT, Brazil’s second largest television network. He also hosted “Programa Silvio Santos,” one of the longest-running shows on Brazilian television.

Silvio Santos, a legend of Brazilian television, where he was one of the leading presenters for several decades, died this Saturday at the age of 93, announced the Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão (SBT) network.

Also a media magnate, Silvio Santos founded SBT, Brazil’s second largest television network, and created various variety shows. Since the 1960s he had hosted Programa Silvio Santos, one of the longest-running shows on Brazilian television.

“Today, heaven is happy because it welcomes our beloved Silvio Santos. He lived 93 years during which he brought happiness and love to Brazilians. His big smile and his voice will always be in our hearts,” said SBT in a press release.

The cause of his death has not been revealed. Silvio Santos had been hospitalized several weeks ago, according to the mediaIn 2013, Forbes magazine compared him to TV host Oprah Winfrey and American directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

A controversial figure, he had been accused of misogyny because of his inappropriate remarks towards women on his show. He was also close to many presidents. One of his sons-in-law was Jair Bolsonaro’s Minister of Communications.

In 2017, videographer Rémi Gaillard accused him of plagiarizing his sketches. In a video posted on YouTube, he accused him of copying several of his videos for a segment of his flagship show Programa Silvio Santos.
