Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva returned yesterday, Sunday, to his official residence in Brasilia, two days following undergoing hip surgery. He left the hospital following a “good recovery,” according to the presidency.

Lula said on the “X” platform: “I left the hospital and am at the Alvorada Palace, where I will work in the coming weeks.” Thank you for your prayers and messages of affection,” according to Agence France-Presse.

He added jokingly: “I am recovering to work more for Brazil and run a marathon.”

Earlier, the presidency reported that Lula, 77 years old, “is in the Alvorada Palace,” at his official residence, where he will complete his recovery.

Meanwhile, the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital in Brasilia, where Lula underwent surgery on Friday, confirmed in a statement that the Head of State had left the facility following showing a good recovery.

During the day, the hospital issued a statement indicating that Lula spent the night in a “stable” health condition, and even “climbed and descended the stairs with the help of a physical therapist.”

Lula had resumed walking the day following the surgery, and began physical therapy sessions on Saturday morning.

Lula underwent a total hip replacement. Shortly following the surgery, his doctors said they expected him to leave the hospital “Monday or at the latest, Tuesday.”

The leftist president, who began his third presidential term in January, underwent surgery under general anesthesia to treat pain that he had suffered for more than a year and said was making him “in a bad mood.”

The doctors revealed that following the hip surgery was completed, they decided to “take advantage of Lola’s good response to anesthesia” to perform plastic surgery to correct the drooping eyelids.

Although he left the hospital on Sunday, the president will have to adjust his travel schedule as he will remain in Brasilia for at least four weeks, although he stressed his intention to “work normally” during the recovery period.

His personal physician, Roberto Khalil Filho, expressed his confidence that Lula would return to his feet in time to participate in the United Nations Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai at the end of November.

The summit is of great importance to Lula, who presents himself as a defender of the environment, and pledged to put an end to deforestation in the Amazon region by 2030.

In the first stage, Lula will have to use a device that helps him walk “so that he does not lose his balance,” according to what surgeon Giancarlo Policello said Friday.

But the president stressed that he would not appear in front of the cameras using a walking aid or crutches, explaining that the decision was taken on the advice of his official photographer.
