Brazilian President Ignores UN Microphone

In his speech on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and despite his microphone being cut off, the Brazilian president spoke about the need to restructure the current major multilateral organizations to reflect the importance of the global South.

He called for government commitments in areas such as climate, artificial intelligence and global governance, saying that “most bodies lack the authority and enforcement to enforce their decisions. The General Assembly has lost its vitality, the Economic and Social Council has collapsed… and the legitimacy of the Security Council is diminished every time double standards are applied.”

“No action has been taken in the face of the atrocities,” he said, adding: “The Bretton Woods institutions (referring to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank) ignore the priorities and needs of the developing world. The Global South is not represented in a manner commensurate with its current political, economic and demographic weight.”

He also criticised the weak international performance in strengthening commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development goals.

“To backtrack on our commitments is to jeopardize everything we have built at great cost. The SDGs have been the biggest diplomatic push of recent years and are on track to become our biggest collective failure,” he stressed, adding that “at the current pace of implementation, only 17% of the 2030 Agenda targets will be achieved on time.”
