Carioca composer, arranger and orchestrator Antonio Ibrahine was the 2023 International Digital Music Festival Award Winnerin the category Game Music, de music for games. The event, held in China, is one of the biggest competitions for composers in the world with participants from 15 countries.
The award ceremony, which had around 300 participants, was held by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in partnership with Unisonar, an American company specializing in music production for the entertainment industry. Furthermore, the festival was sponsored by Mihoyo, a Chinese company that is a reference in game development.
The Brazilian composer competed for the award with 15 finalists. In the decisive stage, each musician received some cinematics, an image that conveys the look and feel of game production, to choose and compose essentially orchestral music.
“Due to the difficulty of application and the high level of composers from all over the world, I was very honored to receive first place and have my music performed by a great orchestra in China, at such an important festival,” said the composer.
Ibrahine, who won a scholarship in the “University of Southern California Thornton Screen Scoring” program, had contact with big names in the segment, such as American game composer Garry Schyman.
In addition to soundtracks for games, the musician also composed for other entertainment sectors, edited the music for “The Unquiet Dead”, and acted as orchestrator and music preparer for the Big Apple Circus performances in New York.
For the Brazilian musician, there is a marked difference present in the musical production of games in relation to other types of soundtracks. “In a game, the duration of the music varies depending on the way the gamer plays. That’s why it’s so important to learn the ‘loop’ feature, a song that can be repeated forever without noticing or tiring the gamer”, explains Ibrahine.
Gaming market on the rise
The Games market in Brazil predicts US$ 2.8 billion in revenue in 2026. This is what the Global Entertainment and Media Survey 2022–2026 reportcarried out by the consultancy company PwC.
According to the study, Brazil has surpassed Mexico and is the market leader in Latin America in this segment. The expectation is that the games industry in the country will have an annual growth rate of 15.2% and will be responsible for 47.4% of the segment in the region by the end of the period analyzed.
Ibrahine highlights the opportunities for various professionals, including musicians, with the rise of this market in Brazil and around the world. “We are living in the golden age of gaming, both in Brazil and abroad. This explosion, in terms of quantity of productions and budget, means a period of many opportunities for composers to specialize in the area”.
