Currently working with companies in Los Angeles, in the United States, Brazilian composer, orchestrator and arranger Antonio Ibrahine is creating original music for the History Tones and Earth Tones album series, both produced by Bleeding Fingers, a company run by Hans Zimmer, composer of Pirates of the Caribbean and two-time Oscar winner for Lion King and Dune. The musician is also working on an arrangement and orchestration for composer and Latin Grammy winner Daniel Figueiredo, responsible for the soundtrack for the soap opera Reis, from Record.
The works are directly related to ethnic music, a hallmark of Ibrahine’s creation, which combines this type of music with orchestral and electronic genres. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Ibrahine has been working with music for 20 years, is a multi-instrumentalist, specialized in film music at Filmuniversitaet Babelsberg, in Germany and took the “music for film/TV” course at USC (University of Southern California). Since last year, he has been working with soundtrack companies and composers in Los Angeles.
The union of ethnic, orchestral and electronic music was one of the characteristics of Ibrahine’s work that brought him closer to the productions of Bleeding Fingers, the company of soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer. The History Tones and Earth Tones albums are produced to be licensed by companies in the film industry such as the History Channel and BBC.
To compose bringing together three such distinct musical genres, Ibrahine explains that it is necessary to dedicate yourself to an in-depth study of the ethnic music in question before starting to create. “It is necessary to understand, for example, the main instruments used, the harmonic progressions, the melodic style”, he says. “Then, I start composing a draft on the piano, which should sound perfectly authentic within the desired style – like Slavic music. Then, I start producing music for orchestra and electronic music together”, details the artist.
Ibrahine’s mastery of producing orchestral music and soundtracks, combined with his knowledge of ethnic music, has also brought him partnerships with composers from the United States with whom he will work in the coming years. The musician is preparing to develop projects with Keith Horn, composer of Muppet Babies, in addition to participating in the composition of the soundtracks for Perfect City: The Patients (Beijing Yiwei Culture and Media CO) and Charlie and Addy (MacKenzie Drive Productions LLC).
“The process of composing this hybrid sound of orchestral-electronic music applied to ethnic music involves great care so as not to end up subverting the music of a certain culture”, he points out. “For this reason I prefer to start focusing on ethnic music, and then I enter into a process almost purely of arranging and orchestrating what was planned.”
The composer also clarifies that orchestral-electronic music is the means by which ethnic music will be expressed, which is why he always prefers to start with the study of the latter.
Recently, Ibrahine also worked as an orchestrator and musical preparer for the internationally relevant circus, Big Apple Circus performing in New York, and as music editor for The Unquiet Dead, a horror film that received international awards (“Best Horror” at Tokyo Film Awards and “Best Horror” at the Budapest Film Fest).
“Being a composer, orchestrator and arranger in Los Angeles brings constant challenges, but that also means, for me, constant improvement both personally and professionally”, concludes the musician.
