For the first time in history, the award is dedicated to Brazil for the exhibition “Terra”, presented in this edition
On the 20th of May, the opening date of the 18th Architecture Biennale in Venice – La Biennale di Venezia, Brazil was awarded the Golden Lion for the first time in history. According to the organization of the event, the selection was due to the research of the curators Gabriela Matos and Paulo Tavares, centering the philosophies and imaginaries of the indigenous and black population in ways of reparation.
The general theme of the event “The Laboratory of the Future [O laboratório do futuro]”, was proposed by Lesley Lokko, in the sense of experimenting with possible futures. Lokko states “At the heart of every project is the primacy and power of a tool: the imagination. It is impossible to build a better world if you cannot first imagine it”.
Upon receiving the award, the duo emphasizes the dialogue between the Brazilian proposal and the main theme and states “we are very happy to have received this opportunity, inspired by Lesley Lokko, to present Brazil as a diasporic territory, with great ancestral contributions by Afro communities -Brazilians and indigenous people. We believe these are the technologies that must be part of the solutions to create a different and more equal future for humanity, and to restore and protect our world.”
At the same event, other awards were given away. The group DAAR – Decolonizing Architecture Art Research (Alessandro Petti and Sandi Hilal), from Stockholm and Bethlehem (Palestine) – respectively – won as best participant in the edition and Demas Nwoko, artist, designer and Nigerian architect, for the body of his work.
