Brasilia (Reuters) – In a dispute over content moderation and freedom of expression, Brazil’s Supreme Court has given Elon Musk an ultimatum for his social media platform X.

According to a court ruling published on Wednesday, the entrepreneur must appoint a legal representative for his messaging service in Brazil within 24 hours, otherwise the website will be blocked in the country. In his ruling, Judge Alexandre de Moraes pointed out that under Brazilian Internet law, companies that violate the country’s laws or the confidentiality of private information can expect their activities to be temporarily suspended.

Earlier this month, X announced that it would cease operations in Brazil and lay off its employees due to Moraes’ “censorship orders.” However, the service can still be used in Brazil. X did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
