President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva sacked the Brazilian army chief today, Saturday, amid fears of threats to democracy in the country in the wake of the riots in the capital following far-right demonstrators took to the streets.
The official website of the Brazilian Armed Forces on the Internet said that General Julio Cesar de Arruda was dismissed from his post as army chief. He was succeeded by General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, who had been head of the Southeastern Military Command.
Arruda assumed the position of army chief on December 30, two days before the end of the term of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and he obtained the support of President Lula’s administration for his appointment in early January.
