A man who entered a day care center with an ax killed four children and injured at least three others Wednesday in southern Brazil, authorities said.
The governor of the state of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello, confirmed the murders in the city of Blumenau on his Twitter account, writing that the killer has been arrested. Firefighters confirmed that the man attacked with an ax and that three children were taken to hospital.
Scenes broadcast on television showed parents crying in front of the private nursery, called Cantinho do Bom Pastor. The local press reported that the man scaled a wall to enter the nursery brandishing the axe.
Attacks on schools in Brazil were rare, but have happened more frequently in recent years. Last week, a student in Sao Paulo stabbed a teacher to death and injured several others.
“May God comfort the hearts of all families in this time of deep pain,” Governor Mello tweeted.
The military police and the secretary of state security did not immediately respond to requests for more information from The Associated Press.
Blumenau, a city of 366,000 inhabitants, is famous for its annual Oktoberfest festival.
